Government Announces Subsidized Maize Seed Prices for 2025/2026 Season

The Government has announced new subsidized prices for maize seeds for the 2025/2026 financial year as part of efforts to boost food production and strengthen national food security.

In a directive issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the State Department for Agriculture confirmed that KSh 2 billion has been allocated to support maize seed subsidies. The program aims to lower production costs for farmers and improve access to quality farm inputs.

The directive, addressed to the Managing Director of Kenya Seed Company Ltd in Kitale, instructs the institution to harmonize maize seed prices under the subsidy program.

According to the ministry, the subsidized prices are set as follows:

  • 1kg of maize seed will retail at KSh 250

  • 2kg at KSh 500

  • 10kg at KSh 2,500

  • 25kg at KSh 6,000

The government said the initiative forms part of its broader Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda, which focuses on enhancing food and nutrition security by supporting agricultural production rather than consumption.

Officials noted that maize remains a staple food for many households across the country, making the subsidy program critical in ensuring stable supply and affordability.

The ministry also indicated that the directive takes effect immediately, meaning farmers are expected to start accessing the subsidized seeds through authorized channels as preparations for the next planting season begin.

Agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying it could help reduce the cost burden on farmers and increase maize output if implemented effectively.
