MMUST, KU, Zetech Dominate KUSF Playoffs at CUEA

Kenya Premier League side Zetech University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), and Kenyatta University (KU) emerged as dominant forces during the 12th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) ball games playoffs, which concluded on Sunday afternoon at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Zetech University clinched their maiden women’s football title after edging out MMUST 1-0 in a tightly contested final. Daisy Kisuya scored the decisive goal, capitalizing on a loose ball after the MMUST goalkeeper spilled it, allowing her an easy tap-in.

Despite being reduced to ten players following a red card to their goalkeeper, Zetech held firm. Team captain Sheril Muyera stepped up as a makeshift goalkeeper and played a crucial role in preserving the lead.

“This is our maiden victory after losing last year’s final to KU. When we were reduced to ten players, I took up the goalkeeper role and managed to deliver,” said Muyera.

Zetech will now represent Kenya at the upcoming East Africa University Games in Dodoma, Tanzania.

MMUST continued their dominance in women’s volleyball, securing the title for the fourth consecutive year with a convincing straight-sets victory over the University of Nairobi (UoN).

The Kakamega-based side cruised to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 win in a one-sided final.

Captain Mitchell Okumu attributed their success to teamwork and consistent training.

“We always train together as a team, and during our free time we work on correcting mistakes. That has helped us shine,” she said.

She expressed confidence ahead of the regional games:

“Dodoma, here we come as champions. We want to excel not just in Kenya but across East Africa.”

Kenyatta University dominated the netball category, winning both the men’s and women’s titles.

The men’s team defeated Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) 45-33 in the final, while the women’s side edged MMUST 39-34.

Men’s captain Billy Otieno expressed his delight at ending his university career on a high note:

“This is my final year, and winning the title means everything. We worked hard as a team and remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.”

Women’s Handball: MMUST defeated Daystar University to claim the title while Daystar men edged out KU 21-19.

United States International University Africa USIU-A recorded mixed results in men and women. In men, USIU were 58-53 winners over African Nazarene University while their men counterpart lost 47-59 to Zetech.

In rugby 15s, Maseno University produced a dominant display to beat Moi University 35-13 and lift the title on Saturday.
