Sirikwa Classic Continues to Shape Global Cross-Country Stars Ahead of Fifth Edition

Since its inception, the Sirikwa Classic World Athletics Cross Country Gold Tour has steadily cemented its status as one of the most influential cross-country races in the world — not just as a competition, but as a proven cradle of talent.

Held annually at Lobo Village in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, the event has grown into a key fixture on the global athletics calendar. It is one of only two World Cross Country Gold Tour races staged in Kenya, alongside the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run, which traditionally takes place in December.

Over the years, the Sirikwa Classic has consistently brought together established stars and ambitious young runners, offering a rare platform where raw potential is tested against experience on one of the toughest courses in the sport. For many athletes, the race has also served as an early-season benchmark, helping them assess their fitness ahead of track and field competitions, marathon races, and mountain and trail running events.

The event’s impact is evident in the number of athletes who have gone on to enjoy decorated international careers after shining at Sirikwa, underlining its growing reputation as a launchpad for world-class champions.

Among the athletes whose names are firmly etched in the race’s history is Kenya’s Daniel Simiu, one of the most consistent performers on the cross-country circuit. Simiu arrives for the fifth edition in fine form, fresh from winning a bronze medal in the men’s 10km senior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, where Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo claimed a historic third gold medal.

Simiu is now chasing history of his own, targeting an unprecedented third Sirikwa Classic title. His dominance, tactical maturity, and consistency epitomise the level of excellence the race continues to attract, while setting a high benchmark for the chasing pack.

Past winners and podium finishers at Sirikwa have often used strong performances at the event as a springboard to global success, progressing to World Cross Country Championships and major track and road races around the world.

As the countdown to the fifth edition gathers pace, anticipation is building around the emergence of new stars. Kenya’s unrivalled depth in distance running is expected to deliver a start list blending proven champions with fearless newcomers eager to make their mark on home soil.

Race Director Barnaba Korir believes the event plays a critical role in nurturing future champions by giving upcoming athletes a chance to measure themselves before stepping onto the international stage.

“We are lucky because of the races that were awarded to Kenya, and going into the fifth edition, the race has seen many champions being born,” said Korir. “Remember we also have the kids who always compete, and it gives them motivation to continue training. In the end, they realise they have talent and go on to do well at the international level.”

With its reputation firmly established, the Sirikwa Classic once again promises not only fierce competition, but also a glimpse into the future of global distance running.
