ODM’s “Linda Mwananchi” Rally in Kitengela Disrupted by Tear Gas as Leaders Vow to Press On

A highly anticipated political rally held under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) “Linda Mwananchi” tour was dramatically cut short on Sunday, February 15, 2026, when police fired tear gas into the crowd, dispersing thousands of supporters and halting what organisers had described as one of the biggest grassroots events of the year.

The rally, organised in Kitengela town, drew large numbers of supporters from across Kajiado and neighbouring counties, who gathered to hear opposition voices criticise the national government and advocate for issues affecting ordinary Kenyans. The event was the first major engagement since Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna announced the tour amid his ongoing dispute with some party officials over his role within ODM.

Massive Turnout, High Tensions Ahead of Disruption

Prior to the disruption, thousands of supporters chanted slogans and filled Kitengela’s main grounds, with videos shared on social media showing a spirited crowd welcoming Senator Sifuna and other leaders. Participants waved party colours and vocally expressed support for the rally’s message of defending citizens’ welfare and political accountability.

Sifuna, who was joined by senior figures including Godfrey Osotsi and several ODM lawmakers, addressed the gathering with a rallying call to supporters, encouraging citizens to stay steadfast in pushing for their rights and to hold leaders accountable ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Police Crackdown Brings Rally to Abrupt Halt

Eyewitnesses and video footage showed that, shortly after key speeches began, police lobbed tear gas canisters into the crowd, sending supporters scrambling for cover. Thick plumes of gas filled the air as participants were forced to disperse for safety.

In the chaos, Sifuna was heard attempting to calm the crowd and questioning why force was being used against what organisers said was a peaceful political gathering. “You will not disrupt our meeting. Why are you throwing tear gas at us? Relax so that we can continue with the meeting,” he was reported telling supporters as the crowd thinned under the effects of the gas

Leaders Condemn Disruption, Vow to Continue

In the aftermath, both Sifuna and Osotsi condemned the actions of police and other unidentified individuals allegedly involved in undermining the rally. Osotsi thanked Kitengela residents for their resilience and large turnout, affirming that the disruption would not weaken their resolve. He said the message of “Linda Mwananchi” — protecting ordinary citizens — had already taken root among the people.

Sifuna echoed those sentiments, alleging harassment, intimidation and even damage to the rally’s infrastructure earlier in the day. He claimed that party equipment, including the dais and sound system, had been destroyed before police intervened with tear gas. “Despite all the harassment, intimidation and violence from this morning, you showed up,” Sifuna said, adding, “We shall not relent.”

The disrupted rally comes amid broader political tensions within ODM, where rival factions have emerged over leadership direction and strategy. In parallel, another faction led by party leadership loyal to Oburu Odinga held its own rally in Mombasa, highlighting deepening divisions within Kenya’s largest opposition party.

Aftermath and Political Implications

Though the Kitengela rally was prematurely halted, supporters continued to chant political slogans as they left the venue, underscoring lingering discontent and energised opposition sentiment. Analysts say the incident may further polarise political discourse ahead of the election cycle, raising questions about the management of political rallies and civil liberties.

Authorities had not released an official statement on the disruption by the time of publication. However, political observers noted the potential legal and constitutional issues raised when public political assemblies are met with force, particularly in contested and high-stake environments.

Supporters and party leaders have vowed that the “Linda Mwananchi Tour” will proceed, insisting that rallies will continue across the country despite the setback in Kitengela.
