Murkomen Launches Cherangany Unity Cup, Rallies Youth to Shun Drugs

Kipchumba Murkomen on Sunday presided over the launch of the Cherangany Unity Cup at Makutano Primary School in Cherangany, Trans-Nzoia County, calling on residents to uphold peace and unity in one of Kenya’s most diverse rural constituencies.

Speaking during the colourful event, the Interior Cabinet Secretary described Cherangany as a model of coexistence, noting that the constituency hosts communities from across the country who have lived together harmoniously for decades.

“Cherangany is among the most multi-ethnic rural constituencies in Kenya. This diversity is our greatest strength, and it behoves all of us to safeguard peace, unity and harmony as the foundation of our shared progress,” Murkomen said.

The month-long tournament will feature 112 football teams and 63 volleyball teams drawn from all seven wards of Cherangany Constituency. Organisers say the competition will culminate in finals with attractive prizes aimed at motivating young athletes and promoting grassroots talent.

Murkomen emphasised that beyond nurturing sporting excellence, the Unity Cup is part of a broader strategy to address alcohol and drug abuse among the youth in Trans-Nzoia.

“This tournament is not just about sports; it is about providing a positive and engaging platform for our young people to channel their energy, develop their talents, and stay away from drugs and other negative behaviours,” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to working with local leaders, security agencies and community stakeholders to curb substance abuse, which he described as a growing concern in the region.

Among leaders present at the event were Erick Mutai, Governor of Kericho County; Allan Chesang, Senator for Trans-Nzoia; Kakai Bisau, Member of Parliament for Kiminini; and Gideon Oyagi, the Trans-Nzoia County Commissioner, alongside other county and national government officials.

Leaders at the event lauded the initiative, saying it would not only strengthen social cohesion but also empower young people through sports and community engagement.

The Cherangany Unity Cup is expected to run for over a month, bringing together hundreds of teams and thousands of residents in a celebration of talent, unity and shared purpose.
