Dr. Reuben Kigame Endorses Charles Kanjama for Law Society of Kenya Presidency, Cites Need to Defend Constitutionalism
Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has publicly endorsed Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama in his bid for the presidency of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), describing him as “a courageous and results-driven leader” capable of restoring the legal profession’s integrity and constitutional mandate.
In a strongly worded statement, Dr. Kigame said the LSK must reclaim its historic role as a fearless defender of constitutionalism and access to justice, particularly at a time when, he argued, Kenya’s democratic foundations face significant strain.
“The LSK is one of the institutions mandated to protect Kenya’s democracy, which is under great threat,” Kigame said. “It must rise again as a bold and independent voice against state overreach and the erosion of fundamental rights.”
Kigame pointed to Kanjama’s legal challenge to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) verification process, in which he questioned the conduct of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), as evidence of his resolve. According to Kigame, the move demonstrated Kanjama’s willingness to confront institutional complacency and defend democratic processes when they are undermined.
“He has already shown that he does not retreat when constitutional principles are at stake,” Kigame said.
Kanjama currently serves as Chairman of the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum, a role Kigame says has showcased his commitment to sound public policy, governance, and professional ethics. Kigame added that he shares with Kanjama a political philosophy grounded in “Haki, Utu, and Maadili” — justice, humanity, and integrity — values he believes are urgently needed within the legal fraternity.
The presidential aspirant further argued that under Kanjama’s leadership, the LSK would restore financial discipline and confront allegations of corruption within the justice system. He noted persistent concerns raised by lawyers regarding bribery and collusion involving some judicial officers, saying decisive leadership is required to rebuild public trust.
“Kanjama offers integrity, competence, and fearless advocacy,” Kigame stated. “He is prepared to protect the independence of the Bar, elevate member welfare, and restore confidence in LSK leadership.”
He expressed confidence that Kanjama would champion reforms aimed at dismantling corruption within the judiciary, defending constitutionalism, and empowering both senior and young advocates across the country.
The endorsement adds a significant political voice to Kanjama’s campaign and signals growing interest in the LSK race, widely viewed as pivotal to the direction of Kenya’s legal profession and its role in safeguarding democratic governance.
