Big Expectations as Eldoret City Inaugurates First Board

The City of Eldoret has officially inaugurated its pioneer City Board, ushering in a new chapter of leadership and raising expectations for accelerated economic growth and sustainable urban development.

The board members were sworn in on Thursday in a ceremony that marked a historic milestone for Eldoret, following its elevation to city status. The team now shoulders the responsibility of shaping policies and strategies that will position the fast-growing urban centre as a premier economic hub in Kenya and the wider East African region.

Speaking during the inauguration, Jonathan Bii Chelilim said the newly formed board must move with speed and purpose to ensure the city lives up to its promise.

“We are a new city, yes, but we are champions. The board must move swiftly to introduce sound policies that will make Eldoret excel in all sectors,” said Governor Bii.

He noted that his administration has already laid a solid foundation through major infrastructure improvements and enhanced urban planning. The Governor cited a KSh1 billion investment, in partnership with the national government, aimed at upgrading key link roads within the city to ease congestion and improve connectivity. He also pointed to the establishment of an ultra-modern market as a catalyst for boosting trade and empowering small-scale traders.

Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea challenged the board to work closely with the county government in crafting investor-friendly policies that will unlock Eldoret’s economic potential.

“We must create a conducive environment that attracts investors and stimulates job creation for our youth,” he said.

The County Assembly’s Housing and Urban Development Committee Chair, Amos Kiptanui, congratulated the board members, expressing confidence in their ability to guide the city through its formative years.

Minority Leader Francis Muya described the board as the product of a rigorous vetting process, emphasizing that members were selected based on merit, expertise and experience.

MCAs Rebecca Jepchirchir and Moses Kebenei, who also serve on the Housing and Urban Development Committee, echoed similar sentiments, urging the board to prioritize orderly urban expansion, service delivery and inclusive growth.
