Affordable Housing Programme Surpasses 262,000 Units as Kabete Project Nears 2027 Completion

The government’s Affordable Housing Programme has reached a major milestone, with more than 262,000 housing units currently under construction across the country, reinforcing its position as one of the most consequential development initiatives in Kenya’s history.

The programme continues to serve as a catalyst for job creation and economic growth. More than 500,000 young people are engaged in various capacities at construction sites nationwide, alongside over 5,500 graduate interns gaining hands-on experience. The initiative has significantly accelerated growth in the construction sector while strengthening local supply chains through increased demand for locally sourced building materials and services.

Beyond employment, the programme is steadily expanding access to home ownership for low- and middle-income earners. Through favourable mortgage terms, beneficiaries can secure homes with monthly payments starting from as low as KSh3,800, making home ownership increasingly attainable for thousands of families.

During an inspection of the Kabete Affordable Housing Project in Westlands Constituency, Nairobi, officials expressed satisfaction with the progress of the development. The project comprises 1,746 housing units whose construction began last year and is on track for completion in March 2027.

Leaders noted that the Kabete project exemplifies the broader national ambition of delivering dignified, affordable housing while stimulating inclusive economic growth. Once completed, the development is expected to provide quality homes to hundreds of families and further boost economic activity in the area.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring timely completion of all ongoing projects, maintaining that the Affordable Housing Programme remains central to its agenda of expanding opportunities, creating jobs, and delivering decent housing for Kenyans.
