Umoja Secondary School Elevates Learning with New Science Lab and Sh816,000 in Bursaries
Umoja Secondary School in Limuru Constituency has taken a significant stride toward improving education and student welfare, unveiling a fully equipped science laboratory and receiving Sh816,000 in bursaries aimed at strengthening science education and supporting learners from vulnerable households.
The event, marked by excitement and hope, was officiated by Limuru Member of Parliament, John Kiragu Chege, and attended by parents, teachers, students, and other education stakeholders. The initiative was widely hailed as a game-changer for learning outcomes in the region.
The newly launched laboratory is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in practical science experiments, bridging the gap between theory and practice. This facility is expected to significantly enhance student performance in national examinations, particularly in science subjects, which are critical for higher education and competitive careers.
Speaking during the launch, MP Chege emphasized the transformative power of investing in education. “Investment in education goes beyond classrooms; it builds dignity, creates opportunities, and secures the future of our children,” he said. “Science laboratories are not just rooms with equipment; they are launchpads for innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving.”
Since its establishment between 2013 and 2017, Umoja Secondary School has steadily grown to become a beacon of learning for local children who previously lacked access to secondary education within the constituency. This year, the school celebrated a historic milestone: four students achieved university entry grades for the first time in its history—a testament to the school’s commitment to academic excellence.
In addition to the laboratory and bursaries, funds have been allocated for the construction of a 12-door girls’ toilet block. This project aims to improve sanitation, protect the dignity of female learners, and create a safer, more conducive learning environment. Such infrastructure upgrades, coupled with the recently implemented school feeding programme, have been credited with improving attendance, learner wellbeing, and overall academic performance.
The bursaries, provided through the Limuru National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), will be distributed to all students at the day school, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to education. This initiative is expected to reduce dropouts, especially among learners from low-income households, while motivating students to excel academically.
Parents and education stakeholders attending the event praised the school’s dedication to nurturing talent, developing skills, and creating opportunities for students. They lauded the collaborative efforts between local leaders, the community, and government agencies in realizing the projects.
“Umoja Secondary School represents the future of Limuru Constituency. With continued support, it will produce leaders, innovators, and professionals who will drive the county and the nation forward,” said one local education officer.
MP Chege and other local leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Umoja Secondary School and other educational institutions across Limuru, promising to continue advocating for resources that empower students and enhance learning outcomes.
With the new science laboratory, bursaries, improved sanitation facilities, and ongoing support for vulnerable students, Umoja Secondary School is poised to set a benchmark for holistic education in the constituency, ensuring that learners are well-prepared for higher education and the challenges of the modern world.
