Human Rights Activist Raises Alarm Over Emerging Political Alliance

An Eldoret-based human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has issued a strong warning to Kenyans over what he describes as a dangerous and deceptive political alliance involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Democratic Congress Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala.

In a detailed statement circulated to the media on Wednesday, the activist urged Kenyans—particularly citizens from Central Kenya and Western Kenya—to exercise caution and critical judgment regarding the growing political cooperation between the two leaders. He claimed the partnership is being presented to the public as a potential alternative political force, but in reality represents what he termed a “business-driven political arrangement” rather than a principled opposition or leadership movement.

According to the activist, the alliance should not be viewed as one founded on shared ideology, national vision, or policy direction. Instead, he alleged that it is motivated by personal financial interests and opportunistic calculations aimed at benefiting a small political elite.

The activist further alleged that recent reports of disagreements between the two leaders were linked to disputes over money received from political supporters and well-wishers, including funds reportedly raised during international engagements. He claimed that the temporary fallout between the two figures was resolved only after what he described as negotiations over financial sharing, though he acknowledged that these allegations have not been independently verified.

“These are not leaders coming together to rescue the country or offer solutions to unemployment, high cost of living, or inequality,” Ngetich said. “This is a political marriage of convenience whose foundation is money, blackmail, and survival.” he added.

The activist accused Cleophas Malala of engaging in coercive and manipulative political behavior throughout his political career, alleging that his past and present party movements were driven by personal demands rather than ideological disagreements. He claimed that Malala’s exit from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was not based on principle, but followed failed attempts to exert pressure within the party.

Similar allegations were made regarding Malala’s standing within the Democratic Congress Party, where the activist suggested internal tensions arose from unmet demands. He further claimed that Malala had previously explored returning to UDA under specific conditions, allegedly using this possibility as leverage in political negotiations.

Turning to the former Deputy President Ngetich accused Rigathi Gachagua of exploiting ethnic identity and regional grievances to advance his political agenda. He alleged that Gachagua has consistently employed divisive rhetoric, inciting communities in the Mount Kenya region against the government and other ethnic groups, while spreading misinformation about national development projects.

“These tactics may temporarily mobilize political support, but they ultimately weaken national unity and undermine democratic institutions,” Ngetich warned.

He further expressed concern that a political formation led by the two figures could entrench marginalization and discrimination if entrusted with power. According to the activist, their past conduct demonstrates a pattern of what he described as hate-driven politics, tribal mobilization, and intimidation of dissenting voices.

“If such leaders were to assume national leadership, other regions of the country would face exclusion, and Kenya’s fragile social fabric would be put at serious risk,” he said.

The activist emphasized that his statement was not intended to silence political competition, but to encourage accountability, transparency, and issue-based politics. He urged Kenyans to interrogate political alliances beyond public rallies and social media narratives, and to demand clear policy positions, ethical conduct, and respect for the rule of law.

Efforts to obtain comment from representatives of Mr. Gachagua and Mr. Malala were unsuccessful by the time of publication. Neither of the two leaders has publicly responded to the allegations raised in the statement.

Political observers note that as Kenya approaches another election cycle, political realignments and alliances are likely to intensify. Analysts caution, however, that heightened rhetoric and unsubstantiated claims risk inflaming ethnic tensions and distracting from substantive policy debate.

The activist concluded by calling on civil society, the media, and religious institutions to remain vigilant and play their role in safeguarding democratic values.

“Kenyans must not be misled by loud speeches and temporary alliances,” he said. “Our future depends on leadership built on integrity, truth, and national unity—not manipulation, blackmail, and personal gain.”
