Suspect Arrested as Police Recover Stolen Goods in Kisumu
Police in Kisumu East Sub-County have arrested a man suspected to be part of a criminal gang that has been terrorising residents of Kisumu and its surrounding areas, recovering a cache of stolen property in the process.
Officers from Gita Police Station arrested the suspect, identified as James Kenneth Otieno, following days of intelligence-led operations targeting the gang. Police say the operation intensified after one of Otieno’s alleged accomplices, Hussein Hassan, was lynched by members of the public on January 23, 2026, after being cornered with a stolen motorcycle.
Acting on information that Otieno was still in possession of stolen items, officers conducted a swift and well-coordinated raid at his residence in Kajulu Gardens, Konya sub-location.
During the operation, police recovered three motorcycles, a 65-inch Hisense television, a 12kg Menghas gas cylinder, a double-burner gas cooker, several mobile phones, and assorted motorcycle spare parts, among other items. Authorities said some of the recovered goods have already been positively identified by their rightful owners.
Otieno is currently being held in police custody as processing continues ahead of his arraignment in court. The recovered items have been secured as exhibits, with police urging members of the public who may have lost property to report to Gita Police Station for identification and collection.
The National Police Service (NPS) reiterated its commitment to combating crime and safeguarding lives and property across the country. Police also cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging them instead to cooperate with law enforcement and allow justice to take its due course.
