President Ruto Nominates Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga as Kenya’s Ambassador to UNEP

President William Samoei Ruto has nominated Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, EGH, as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a move that is set to reshape Kenya’s engagement in global environmental diplomacy.

In a statement issued on January 23, 2026, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said the nomination was made under the presidential prerogative and has been formally submitted to the National Assembly for review and approval, as required by the Constitution.

The appointment, once confirmed by Parliament, will see Dr. Odinga represent Kenya at UNEP, whose headquarters are based in Nairobi, reinforcing the country’s longstanding role as host of the UN’s principal environmental body.

Recognition of Service and Leadership

Government officials have welcomed the nomination as a recognition of Dr. Odinga’s distinguished career in public service and her leadership on issues of social justice, gender equity and civic engagement.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo described the nomination as a “significant boost to Kenya’s environmental diplomacy,” noting that it acknowledges both Dr. Odinga’s own contributions and the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei also praised the move as a fruit of the current broad-based government arrangement, saying it reflects unity and cooperation between political partners ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political Reactions and Debate

However, the nomination has also drawn political commentary. Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru publicly cautioned Dr. Odinga against accepting the appointment, framing it as a politically risky offer and urging her to consider broader implications for her family’s legacy in national politics.

Background and Expectations

Dr. Odinga is widely respected as an educationist, civic leader and advocate for women’s empowerment. If approved, she will replace Ababu Namwamba, who was recently reassigned as Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda. Analysts say her appointment could amplify Kenya’s voice on environmental issues and further strengthen the nation’s leadership in global sustainability and climate policy.

Parliamentary approval remains pending, after which Dr. Ida Betty Odinga will assume her role representing Kenya at UNEP, positioning the country at the heart of international environmental discussions at a critical time for climate action and sustainable development.
