Mystery Intruder Breaches Interior CS Murkomen’s Office at Nyayo House
Kenyan security agencies are investigating a major security breach at Nyayo House after a mystery intruder gained unauthorized access to the high-security office of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and remained inside for nearly five hours without detection.
According to preliminary investigations, the breach occurred on the night of Saturday, January 10, into the early hours of Sunday, January 11, 2026, during a scheduled fumigation exercise at the government building. The intruder is believed to have entered the premises at 10:45 p.m. and exited at 3:40 a.m., spending approximately four hours and 55 minutes inside the Cabinet Secretary’s office.
Exploited Fumigation Exercise
The fumigation, which ran from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., appears to have provided cover for the breach. Investigators say the suspect wore nondescript coveralls similar to those used by night cleaning and pest-control crews, allowing him to blend in and avoid suspicion.
CCTV footage reviewed by detectives shows a tall man wearing black jeans and a black cap, the cap pulled low to obscure his face from cameras. The footage reportedly captures the suspect entering the main lobby without undergoing the mandatory biometric scan, using a lift to access the ministerial floor, and later exiting the building — all without being challenged by security personnel.
Targeted Information, Not Equipment
Authorities say the intruder did not steal laptops or other high-value hardware. Instead, his actions suggest a deliberate focus on sensitive information.
Investigators report that the suspect was seen:
Sifting through and rearranging physical files
Interfering with two desktop computers
Sitting at the Cabinet Secretary’s desk for an extended period
“These actions point to a targeted intelligence-gathering operation rather than a conventional theft,” a senior detective involved in the probe said.
Multiple Security Failures Identified
The investigation has revealed several lapses in protocol on the night of the breach. Some security officers were reportedly allowed to leave early due to the fumigation, while the GSU officers assigned to the ministerial floor were allegedly on a ‘tea break’ at the time the intruder accessed the office.
As a result, the entire night security detail at Nyayo House has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Forensic Investigations Ongoing
DCI forensic teams have since dusted the office for fingerprints and other trace evidence. However, as of now, the suspect remains at large.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of critical government installations and the protection of sensitive state information. Officials say a comprehensive review of security procedures at Nyayo House is underway, with further findings expected in the coming days.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
