Murkomen Reaffirms Commitment to Security as Laikipia Police Headquarters Is Commissioned

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace and stability in Laikipia and other regions historically affected by banditry.

Speaking on Friday during the commissioning of the Laikipia County Police Headquarters in Rumuruti, Murkomen said the new facility will strengthen security operations and consolidate recent gains made in restoring peace in the region.

The event was presided over by President William Samoei Ruto and attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, national and county leaders, and security officials.

The police headquarters, constructed by the Laikipia West National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), is expected to improve coordination, response times and overall effectiveness of security agencies operating in the county.

Murkomen commended Members of Parliament for supporting the government’s security modernisation programme through the use of NG-CDF funds to put up critical infrastructure, noting that such collaboration is key to enhancing public safety.

As the government continues to make progress in the fight against banditry, the CS renewed the call for individuals still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily. He said security agencies will continue to intensify operations against criminal groups to ensure the region remains peaceful and conducive for development.

Murkomen also noted that the government is stepping up efforts to combat alcohol and drug abuse, describing the vice as a serious socioeconomic threat that undermines productivity and security, particularly among the youth.

Earlier, President Ruto commissioned the construction of the Rumuruti Modern Market, a KSh 260 million project with a capacity of 750 traders. The market is one of 14 modern markets currently being developed by the government in Laikipia County.

The projects, leaders said, reflect the government’s integrated approach of linking enhanced security with economic development to improve livelihoods and spur growth in previously insecure regions.
