Murkomen Condemns ‘Barbaric’ Police Assault in Nandi Hills, Orders Swift Action
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly condemned alleged police misconduct captured in a viral CCTV clip showing armed officers assaulting young men who were reportedly playing pool in Nandi Hills town.
Reacting to the footage, Murkomen described the incident as “barbaric, unacceptable, unconstitutional, and inhumane,” saying it amounted to a serious breach of the law and fell far below the standards expected of the National Police Service (NPS).
Speaking at the Coast region during a meeting with local lawmakers, the CS drew a clear line between officers who act within the law and those who engage in criminal conduct.
“I will continue to defend police officers who are prosecuted while carrying out their lawful duties, but I will not defend officers who commit crimes,” Murkomen said. “The issue of police brutality is one we must deal with firmly and conclusively.”
Murkomen warned that any officers found culpable would face severe consequences as provided for under the law, including dismissal from the service.
He confirmed that the Inspector General of Police had already deployed a team from the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate the incident, while the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched parallel investigations.
“Any officer found guilty will face dire consequences, including dismissal from the service,” the CS stated.
Earlier, the National Police Service announced that it had dispatched a team to Nandi Hills to investigate the incident and was expected to submit a report within three days. The service assured the public that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any officers found to have acted unlawfully.
IPOA also condemned the assault, confirming that it had sent a Rapid Response Investigation Team to the area to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability, stating that any officers found to have violated the law would be dealt with in line with its mandate.
The incident has sparked public outrage, renewing calls for accountability and reforms to address police brutality and restore public trust in law enforcement.
