Lusaka Dismisses Claims of Bungoma Airstrip Land Grabbing, Affirms Smart City Project
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has dismissed claims that land formerly occupied by the defunct Bungoma Airstrip has been illegally grabbed, assuring residents that the parcel was lawfully degazetted to pave the way for the construction of a Smart City.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service at Lugulu Friends Church, Lusaka described reports surrounding the fencing of the airstrip land as misleading propaganda by critics intent on derailing development in the county.
“The Bungoma Airstrip land was duly degazetted by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). It has not been grabbed, and no individual stands to benefit personally from this project,” Lusaka said.
The governor explained that the ongoing fencing works are part of preparatory activities for the planned Smart City project, which he said is expected to drive urban development, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth in Bungoma County.
At the same time, Lusaka reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining and expanding air transport services in the county, revealing that the Matulo Airstrip is currently undergoing expansion to support commercial air operations.
He disclosed that the Kenya Airports Authority is fast-tracking the construction of passenger terminals and the installation of modern security infrastructure to enhance safety and efficiency once operations begin.
“The expansion of Matulo Airstrip will position Bungoma as a competitive hub for commercial air services, while ensuring the highest safety standards for passengers,” the governor said.
Lusaka further noted that 2026 would be a year of accelerated service delivery, saying his administration is focused on implementing key legacy projects with long-term benefits for residents.
“This is a year of service. We are determined to deliver development that improves the livelihoods of our people and secures Bungoma’s future,” he said.
The Smart City project and the redevelopment of air transport infrastructure form part of the county government’s broader strategy to modernize Bungoma and attract investment.
