The Catholic Diocese of Kitui is in mourning following the sudden death of Deacon Denis Bernard Maithya, who died in a tragic road accident on the evening of Tuesday along the Mwingi–Nguni Road at Kyanundu.

According to the Diocese, Deacon Denis was involved in a road accident and died on the spot. His untimely death has sent shockwaves across the Diocese, coming barely weeks after his ordination to the diaconate on December 8, 2025. At the time of his death, he was serving at St. Patrick’s Parish, Nguni.

The late Deacon Denis was the son of Boniface Maithya Kisungi and Cecilia Muia Maithya, and hailed from St. Paul’s–Kasyala Parish. He was the third-born in a family of five children.

Born with a deep calling to priesthood, Deacon Denis began his academic journey at Kyeni Primary School, where he studied from 2001 to 2010, before proceeding to WeaverBird High School, Kitale, for his secondary education between 2011 and 2014.

He joined St. Mary’s Propaedeutic Seminary, Molo, for his spiritual year from 2016 to 2017, before enrolling at St. Augustine’s Senior Seminary, Mabanga, where he pursued philosophical studies from 2017 to 2020. He later undertook theological formation at St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, Nairobi, from 2021 to 2025.

Deacon Denis graduated from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) on October 24, 2025, marking a major milestone in his journey of faith and service.

During his formation, he served in various parishes across the Diocese, including Ikutha, Kabati, Miambani, Katutu, Mutomo, Nuu, Nguni, and Museve, where he was widely admired for his humility, dedication, and pastoral zeal.

The Diocese described him as a devoted servant of God whose life was marked by faith, discipline, and commitment to pastoral work.

The Catholic Diocese of Kitui has called on the faithful to keep the family of Deacon Denis in prayer and to pray for the repose of his soul.

“May the soul of Deacon Denis Bernard Maithya rest in eternal peace,” the Diocese said in a statement.
