Affordable Housing Program Eases Path to Home Ownership for Thousands of Kenyans
Home ownership is becoming more attainable for low- and middle-income earners following the continued rollout of the government’s Affordable Housing Program, a flagship initiative aimed at reducing the country’s housing deficit while promoting dignified living.
The program targets Kenyans earning between KES 20,000 and KES 149,999 per month, offering them access to quality housing without the financial strain traditionally associated with owning a home. Designed to be inclusive, the initiative provides a range of options including studio apartments as well as one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, allowing buyers to choose homes that match their household needs and financial capacity.
At the center of the program’s implementation is the Boma Yangu initiative, a digital platform that offers prospective homeowners information, registration, and ongoing support throughout the application process. Interested individuals can access the service online via bomayangu.go.ke or through the USSD code *832#, making the program accessible even to those without internet connectivity.
Officials say the Affordable Housing Program is not only focused on increasing the number of housing units, but also on ensuring comfort, convenience, and dignity for residents. Developments under the program are planned with access to essential services and infrastructure to support sustainable urban living.
The initiative continues to gain momentum under the leadership of Hon. Charles Hinga, Principal Secretary in the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, whose emphasis on efficient service delivery has helped streamline processes and improve public confidence in the program.
As demand for affordable housing continues to rise, the government maintains that the program remains a critical pillar in addressing urban housing challenges and expanding home ownership opportunities for ordinary Kenyans.
