KMPDU Suspends Medical Services in Siaya After Alleged Assault on Doctor

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has suspended all medical services in Siaya County following what it terms as the alleged assault of a young doctor on duty. The drastic move is expected to significantly disrupt health services across the county.

In a letter dated December 2, 2025, KMPDU Nyanza Branch Secretary Dr. Aggrey Orwenyo Nyabuti said the incident occurred on the night of November 30, when the doctor was allegedly attacked while attending to a patient who required emergency medical care. According to the union, the attack reportedly involved “county government leadership, a chief, and staff from the governor’s office,” though the claims remain unverified.

Dr. Nyabuti condemned the alleged assault, describing it as “barbaric” and a gross violation of workers’ rights and international labour standards. He cited the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 155 on Occupational Safety and Health, which requires employers and governments to ensure that workplaces are safe and free from violence, intimidation, and all forms of hazards.

“This barbaric act is not only morally reprehensible but also a direct violation of international labor standards,” he stated, adding that healthcare workers should not be subjected to intimidation while performing their duties.

KMPDU is demanding immediate action from the Siaya County Government, led by Governor James Orengo, to guarantee the safety of medical personnel. The union has also asked the county administration to publicly commit to protecting health workers from harassment, interference, and threats that undermine their professional judgment.

“The health sector cannot function under fear and coercion,” the union said, insisting that doctors must be allowed to work independently and without undue influence.

The letter, which was copied to senior county officials including the County Secretary, Chief Officer for Health, CEC Member for Health Services, and the National Secretary General of KMPDU, warned that medical services will remain suspended until the county government demonstrates accountability and takes concrete steps to address the matter.

Dr. Nyabuti emphasized that the union “stands firm” and will not tolerate any form of workplace violence against its members. “Until the County Government demonstrates action, our members will not resume duty,” he said.

The suspension is expected to affect operations in all public hospitals and health centres across Siaya, potentially delaying emergency response, routine treatment, and other critical health services for residents.
