Five Illegal Firearms Surrendered in Trans Mara as Government Steps Up Security Operations

Five illegal firearms and fourteen rounds of ammunition have been voluntarily surrendered in Trans Mara, as the Government intensifies security operations aimed at ending persistent clashes in the region.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the development on Tuesday following a high-level security meeting held at Siteti in Trans Mara South Sub-County. He described the surrender as a positive but modest step, noting that close to 100 illegal firearms are still believed to be in circulation.

“I am pleased that since the President spoke yesterday, five illegal firearms and fourteen rounds of ammunition have been voluntarily surrendered,” Murkomen said.

The Cabinet Secretary extended a seven-day amnesty, urging individuals still holding illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily. He warned that once the grace period lapses, the Government will launch a firm, intelligence-led operation to restore stability in the area.

“We have extended a seven-day olive branch to individuals in possession of illegal firearms to voluntarily surrender them,” he said, adding that decisive action will follow to ensure lasting peace.

Murkomen further noted that the security operation will be supported by additional measures, including a recently gazetted 30-day night curfew, which is intended to enable effective deployment of security personnel and curb further violence.

On the humanitarian front, the Cabinet Secretary said the Government is mobilising assistance for families affected by the clashes. Through the Department of Special Programmes, support will include building materials to help rebuild damaged homes, food supplies, medication, and other essential relief items.

He also issued a stern warning to politicians and individuals accused of inciting communities, particularly through social media and local media platforms. Murkomen cautioned against politicising the security situation and interfering with ongoing operations.

“We are aware of politicians and individuals who have been inciting civilians through social media and local media channels. Some have already been arrested, and we will pursue others. All those involved will be charged in a court of law,” he said.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, alongside other senior security officials, as the Government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and security in Trans Mara.
