What Killed Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo? — Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death

A post-mortem examination into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo has revealed that he died from severe blunt force trauma sustained in a high-impact road accident earlier this month, family pathologist Dr. Joseph Ndung’u has confirmed.

Dr. Ndung’u, who represented the family at the autopsy conducted at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, said the injuries were extensive and fatal. According to the pathology report:

  • Jirongo suffered crush injuries to the chest, including multiple fractured ribs.

  • There was perforation of the heart and rupture of major blood vessels, leading to massive internal bleeding.

  • He also had crush injuries to the abdomen and liver damage, with bleeding into the abdominal cavity.

  • The spine was severely injured, including transection of the spinal cord, and both legs had fractures.

  • Additional fractures were found on his right hand.

The injuries were consistent with a violent and high-impact collision. Dr. Ndung’u concluded that blunt force trauma from the crash was the direct cause of death.

The crash occurred on 13 December 2025 along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway in the Karai area of Naivasha, when Jirongo’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle bus. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, including reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses and the bus driver.

The late politician was 64 years old at the time of his death.
