Family in Shock After Real Daughter Reappears Months After They Buried a Stranger in Kisii

By Staff Reporter

A family in Gotinyango, Kisii County, has been left reeling after discovering that the woman they buried months ago—believed to be their missing daughter—was actually a stranger. The shocking revelation came when their real daughter unexpectedly contacted them, prompting authorities to exhume the body for identification.

The family had been searching for their daughter, who had gone missing for two months without any communication, when a friend alerted them to a body at the Keroka morgue. The woman had died in a road accident, and the friend believed she resembled the missing daughter.

Consumed by grief and desperate for closure, the family went to the morgue, viewed the body, and identified her as their own. Convinced they had found their missing daughter, they conducted a full funeral and buried the woman on their land. They spent the following months mourning and slowly adjusting to life without her.

But in a dramatic turn of events, their world shifted once again when their real daughter called home using a friend’s phone. The family was stunned. The daughter, alive and unaware of what had transpired, explained that she had been away and unable to reach them.

The call immediately raised alarm, and the family realized they had mistakenly buried someone else.

Local authorities were notified, and an exhumation order was obtained. The body was exhumed this week under the supervision of police and pathologists as investigators work to establish the identity of the unknown woman.

Residents of Gotinyango expressed shock at the bizarre mix-up, while the grieving family now faces the emotional toll of reliving their loss—this time for someone they never knew.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the misidentification and the identity of the deceased woman are ongoing.
