Chemical Spill Prompts Emergency Response in Uasin Gishu
A swift emergency response is underway in Uasin Gishu County after a chemical spillage was reported in the Matharu area, prompting Governor Jonathan Bii to issue a public safety alert and outline measures taken to protect residents and the environment.
Preliminary assessments revealed that the affected truck had been transporting a container carrying natural rubber latex in its primary form. Although the substance’s full impact is yet to be determined, county authorities acted quickly to prevent any further contamination of the local river system.
Governor Bii confirmed that county machinery had been deployed to dig a containment trench, a move aimed at halting additional seepage into nearby waterways. “We responded immediately to control the situation and prevent any escalation,” he said.
Experts from the Public Health Department, Eldowas, and NEMA have collected samples from the scene for detailed laboratory analysis to establish the extent of the contamination. The governor emphasized that more information will be shared once the results are ready.
Meanwhile, residents living downstream have been strongly cautioned against using river water for drinking, cooking, household chores, livestock, or farming. Authorities warned that the water could pose health risks until testing confirms it is safe.
As part of the precautionary measures, the county has also temporarily shut down the Nabkoi water treatment plant, which supplies water to Burnt Forest and parts of Kesses. Governor Bii said the closure was necessary to protect the public from potential contamination.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our people,” Governor Bii reassured residents. “We will continue monitoring the situation closely and provide timely updates as our teams progress with their assessments.”
The county government has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow all safety advisories as investigations continue.
