Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has today presided over the groundbreaking of a Sh60 million modern maternity complex at Makhonge, launched through a partnership between the Safaricom Foundation and the Bungoma County Government.
The project marks a major step in the county’s continued efforts to strengthen maternal and neonatal healthcare.
The state-of-the-art facility, set for completion in nine months,is expected to greatly ease access to quality maternity services for residents of Kimilili and neighbouring regions.
According to the project’s architectural plan, the new complex will comprise a four-bed delivery room, a six-bed antenatal ward, and a 20-bed newborn unit, enabling comprehensive care for mothers and infants. It will also feature a well-equipped labour ward, modern consultation rooms, and support units built to meet current medical standards.
Governor Lusaka hailed the collaboration with Safaricom Foundation as a testament to what strategic partnerships can achieve in improving community health outcomes.
“This project is more than infrastructure; it is a lifeline for our mothers and children,” he said, noting that the facility will help decongest existing centres and improve emergency response for expectant mothers.
With Bungoma’s population steadily growing, Lusaka emphasized that such investments are crucial to ensuring no mother has to travel long distances in search of safe delivery services.
Once operational, the new Makhonge Maternity Complex is expected to significantly transform healthcare delivery in the region.
