31 Lives Lost in Chesongoch Mudslide as Community Holds Solemn Memorial Mass

Grief engulfed the grounds of St. Maurus Primary School in Chesongoch on Monday as families, residents, and leaders gathered for a solemn memorial mass in honor of 31 people who lost their lives in a devastating mudslide that struck the area on the night of Friday, 31st.

Tears flowed freely as names of the victims were read out, each representing a family shattered and a community left in mourning. Clergy members led prayers for the departed, calling for strength, unity, and healing as the community begins to rebuild after the tragedy.
“May their souls continue resting in peace,” echoed mourners throughout the emotional ceremony. “Pole,” many whispered as they comforted bereaved families.

The mass was attended by senior government officials, including Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kipchumba Murkomen, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor, and local leaders from the region. In their remarks, leaders pledged support for recovery efforts and urged residents in landslide-prone areas to heed safety advisories as heavy rains continue across parts of the country.

CS Murkomen reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing assistance to affected families and enhancing disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions. Local leaders also called for urgent intervention, including relocation of at-risk households and construction of protective infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.

The mudslide, triggered by intense rainfall, swept through homes under the cover of darkness, leaving behind widespread destruction and deep emotional scars.

As the community mourns, rescue and recovery operations continue, with humanitarian agencies and volunteers offering support.

The people of Chesongoch now face the difficult journey ahead—rebuilding lives, homes, and hope in the shadow of an immense loss.
