A cloud of sorrow and grief has engulfed Murang’a County after six members of the same family lost their lives in a tragic road accident at Wacengu Bridge, near River Kiama. The heartbreaking incident, which has shocked residents, is being described as one of the deadliest to occur in the county this year.

According to eyewitnesses, the private car in which the family was traveling lost control after the driver reportedly failed to manage it due to brake failure. The vehicle swerved uncontrollably, hit the bridge railings, and plunged into the river below.

“The driver tried to stop the car, but it wouldn’t respond. We heard a loud crash, and moments later, the vehicle disappeared into the water,” recounted one of the witnesses at the scene.

Rescue teams from the police department and emergency response units arrived promptly and worked tirelessly to retrieve the bodies of the six victims. Several survivors who were also in the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to Murang’a Level Five Hospital for treatment.

Murang’a County Police Commander confirmed the incident, stating that investigations have been launched to establish the exact cause of the accident.

“We are investigating whether it was a mechanical failure or human error. We urge all drivers to exercise caution, especially when driving through steep and slippery areas,” he said.

Residents of the Wacengu area have expressed growing concern over the safety of the bridge, saying it has become a notorious black spot that has claimed several lives over time. They are appealing to the government to install warning signs and safety barriers to prevent further tragedies.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Murang’a County mortuary as family members and friends continue to mourn their painful loss. The tragedy has left the community in deep sorrow and serves as a somber reminder of the need for road safety and regular maintenance of the country’s road infrastructure.
