Trans Nzoia Enhances Health with Sh35 Million Drug Supply

Families in Trans Nzoia County are now breathing a sigh of relief after the county government delivered a new batch of medical supplies worth Sh35 million to hospitals and dispensaries in the county.

The delivery, which was made on Wednesday at Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital, comes at a time when various citizens had been worried about drug shortages in hospitals and dispensaries.

The consignment includes essential medications for mental health, eyes care, as well as other essential treatments, said the County Chief Officer for Health and Sanitation, Dr. Judith Simiyu. The supplies will also be dispatched to dispensaries, health centres, and sub-county hospitals, in an effort to sustain services for the next three months.

"These drugs will take the residents at least three months. The consignment includes special drugs like eye drug for Kitale Eye Clinic and drugs for our mental health ward," Dr. Simiyu explained. She went on to assure the public that the drugs would be safe from abuse.

"We wish to assure our citizens that the materials won't be misdirected. It's every health worker's responsibility to utilize them effectively for the welfare of the patients," she further added.

Action was seen as a step in the right direction by the hospital board members in restoring public faith in the county's health system. Board member Father Mica Kibet averred that the reforms being implemented are already having a positive impact.

"With this new board, we have started working on measures to address problems brought by residents. We have not yet had any complaints, and that is good," Father Kibet said.

Another board member, Teresa Metto, appealed to nurses to return to the negotiating table. She emphasized that collaboration and unity in the health sector are essential if patients are to be treated without interruption.

"Our doctors and nurses must open their hearts to communication. That is how we can keep our hospitals smooth and proceed with treating our people," she added.

For most residents, this delivery is not just boxes of medication—it is new hope that if they go to their local clinic or hospital, they will receive the treatment they are seeking.
