MTRH Performs Another Successful Oesophageal Replacement Surgery on Infant from West Pokot
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has once again made headlines with a groundbreaking pediatric surgical success, having performed a rare and complex oesophageal replacement surgery on an 18-month-old girl from Chepareria, West Pokot.
The child was diagnosed with pure oesophageal atresia, a congenital condition in which the oesophagus does not fully develop, leaving a significant gap between the upper and lower segments. The usual corrective method—primary anastomosis, which involves directly connecting the two ends—was not possible due to the length of the gap.
Admitted to MTRH as a newborn at just four days old, the infant began her journey to recovery under the care of the hospital’s Pediatric Surgery team. At that time, surgeons performed a temporary oesophagostomy and inserted a feeding tube to allow for nutrition and growth, preparing her for future definitive surgery.
Last week, after months of careful monitoring and preparation, MTRH surgeons successfully conducted an advanced gastric pull-up procedure. This highly specialized surgery involved mobilizing the stomach and pulling it up into the chest to bridge the gap and form a functional swallowing passage.
The patient recovered well from the operation and has since been discharged, now able to eat and swallow normally.
“This case represents more than just a surgical success—it’s a testament to what can be achieved through multidisciplinary collaboration and commitment to pediatric health,” said Dr. Peter Saula, one of the lead surgeons on the case.
The surgery was performed by a dedicated team comprising Dr. Peter Saula and Dr. Tabitha Mirwoba (Pediatric Surgeons), Dr. Kimani Mbugua (Anaesthesia), Ms. Magdalene Barasa (Theatre Nurse), and Dr. Joram Nyandat (Pediatric Intensive Care).
MTRH remains the only public hospital in Kenya performing such advanced pediatric oesophageal replacement surgeries. To date, six children have undergone the life-changing procedure at the facility, cementing its status as a national leader in pediatric surgical care.
“This milestone underscores MTRH’s commitment to providing world-class care right here in Kenya,” said Dr. Nyandat. “Families no longer need to seek such specialized treatment abroad.”
The Department of Pediatric Surgery at MTRH continues to register outstanding outcomes in managing complex congenital anomalies, reinforcing the hospital’s role as a premier referral center for critical pediatric care in the region.
