Three Arrested in Connection with Magunas Supermarket Arson in Meru
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson attack that destroyed Magunas Supermarket in Meru town on the night of July 7, 2025, in what police say was a targeted criminal operation that also involved looting and destruction of other businesses.
The suspects — Ian Mugambi, Abdulatif Murithi, and Teddy Kaimenyi — were apprehended following a coordinated operation by Meru law enforcement. According to police reports, CCTV footage captured the trio looting the supermarket before allegedly setting it on fire. The same footage is said to show the suspects breaking into Seven Eleven Lounge and Selelite Supermarket during the same night of unrest.
A breakthrough in the investigation came when authorities recovered a dark green motorcycle, registration number KMGN 839F, which is believed to have been used by the suspects during the commission of the crimes.
The three are currently being held at a Meru police station and are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days. A senior officer close to the investigation described the arrests as a “significant step toward justice,” adding that police are committed to ensuring all perpetrators are brought to book.
“We will not rest until all individuals responsible for these acts of destruction and theft are held accountable,” said the officer.
The arson attack left Magunas Supermarket completely destroyed, with losses running into millions of shillings. The incident severely disrupted business activities in Meru’s central business district and caused widespread concern among residents and business owners.
Investigations are still ongoing, and police say more arrests could follow as they continue to pursue additional leads.
