Matatu Owners Association President Albert Karakacha Calls for Security Ahead of Planned Demos

Matatu Owners Association President Albert Karakacha has called on the government to provide adequate security across the country ahead of next week’s planned demonstrations, warning of the devastating impact on transport operators and small-scale businesses.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, Mr Karakacha expressed concern over the rising cases of property destruction, disruption of business operations, and the growing sense of fear among matatu operators whenever demonstrations are held.

“Many of our members operate on loans, and every time property is vandalized or vehicles are damaged, it is a direct blow to their ability to meet repayments and sustain their livelihoods,” he said.

Mr Karakacha emphasized that while the Constitution allows for peaceful demonstrations, it is the government’s responsibility to guarantee law and order and protect the business community from acts of violence and chaos. He warned that continued insecurity during such protests could cripple the transport sector, which plays a vital role in the country’s economy.

“We are not against people expressing themselves, but it should not come at the cost of destroying other people’s investments,” he added.

He urged security agencies to be proactive in deploying enough personnel to hotspots and sensitive areas to prevent looting, destruction of public infrastructure, and attacks on vehicles and operators.

The association also appealed to protest organizers to exercise responsibility and ensure that their activities do not infringe on the rights of others. Mr Karakacha stated that if such demonstrations go unchecked, they risk paralyzing transport operations in major towns, affecting thousands of commuters and workers who rely on matatus daily.

“We support the right to protest peacefully, but we demand equal protection for those who choose to work, run their businesses, and move freely without fear,” he stated.

The Matatu Owners Association is expected to present a formal petition to the Ministry of Transport and the Interior Ministry ahead of the planned protests, outlining concerns and proposed interventions to secure the sector.
