State Turning Peaceful Protesters into Terror Suspects, Says Kigame

The government is weaponizing anti-terror laws to target peaceful protesters instead of going after real criminals, gospel artist and political activist Reuben Kigame has said.

Speaking outside Kahawa Law Courts in Nairobi, Kigame condemned the continued detention of young people accused of terrorism after participating in peaceful picketing. According to Kigame, the charges are false, politically driven, and aimed at silencing the youth.

“I stand here today to say clearly—these young people are not terrorists. They are patriots who love their country enough to demand justice peacefully,” Kigame said. “The real terrorists are those in government who abduct, maim, and kill innocent citizens under the pretext of maintaining national security. Those are the people who should be in Kamiti Maximum Prison.”

Kigame made the remarks after former Chief Justice David Maraga appeared at the court in solidarity with the accused youths, who have been remanded pending investigations. The former CJ criticized the misuse of anti-terrorism laws against innocent citizens, saying the justice system must not be used as a tool to suppress constitutional rights.

Kigame, who leads the Jenga Mkenya Movement, accused security agencies of targeting vulnerable youth instead of addressing state-sponsored violence.

“These young people’s only crime is picketing and demanding a better Kenya. Yet today they stand falsely branded as terrorists. This abuse of power must end,” he said.

Kigame called on Parliament to urgently review the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit’s operations and hold accountable those who misuse security laws for political repression. His movement pledged continued legal and moral support for the detained youths, as well as sustained advocacy against human rights violations.

He concluded by warning that Kenya risks sliding into dictatorship if peaceful dissent continues to be criminalized.

“We must choose as a country whether we want democracy or state tyranny. Today’s court case is not just about these young people—it’s about the future of Kenya.”
