Health Officials Probe Mysterious Illness After Four Deaths in Mombasa

Health authorities have launched an urgent investigation into a mysterious illness suspected to be linked to the deaths of four people in the Migadini area of Mombasa County.

According to the Ministry of Health, a special response team has been dispatched to the area after the Mombasa County Health Department flagged the deaths as unusual and concerning. The fatalities occurred between July 9 and July 14, 2025, prompting fears among residents and heightened scrutiny from health officials.

While there is currently no confirmation that the illness is contagious, the Ministry has urged the public to remain alert and observe basic hygiene practices. Residents have also been advised to avoid direct contact with dead bodies, report any unexplained deaths or disappearances, and seek immediate medical attention if they develop abnormal symptoms.

So far, the victims include:

  • A 91-year-old woman who died on July 9. Neighbours say she had been battling a long-term illness.
  • Three men — aged 57, 69, and 55 — who were all found dead in their homes on July 14. Each had a history of chronic or recent illnesses, including asthma and dengue fever.

Locals reported disturbing physical signs on the deceased, including boil-like sores, dark, peeling skin resembling burns, and a strong, unpleasant odour emanating from the bodies — signs that have deepened the mystery surrounding the deaths.

“The symptoms we’re hearing about are not typical, and that’s why we’re taking this very seriously,” said a health official familiar with the case, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The team on the ground is conducting interviews, reviewing medical histories, and collecting environmental samples.”

The Ministry has emphasized that early investigations do not point toward a contagious outbreak, but cautioned that comprehensive testing and surveillance are ongoing.

In the meantime, community health volunteers have been deployed to Migadini to raise awareness, monitor vulnerable individuals, and encourage timely reporting of any suspicious symptoms.

Authorities are expected to release a preliminary report in the coming days as testing and forensic analysis continue.

“We are not ruling anything out yet,” said the official. “Our focus is to protect public health and prevent any potential escalation.”

Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant as the investigation progresses.
