Crackdown on Narcotics Trafficking: Suspected Drug Courier Arrested on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
In a major blow to narcotics trafficking in the region, Mombasa Anti-Narcotics detectives have arrested a suspected drug trafficker along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway, seizing a haul of cannabis and a significant amount of Tanzanian currency in the operation.
Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, officers intercepted a Nissan matatu, registration number KDK 208D, at the Jomvu area on Saturday. Their operation led to the arrest of 54-year-old Michael Chacha, who was found in possession of the illegal substances.
A thorough search of the vehicle revealed three bags belonging to Chacha, which upon inspection, were found to contain 40 sachets of cannabis sativa. In addition, the officers recovered Ksh4,960 in local currency and Tanzanian shillings amounting to Tsh5,035,000.
Confirming the arrest, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) lauded the swift action of the Anti-Narcotics Unit, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
"The suspect was promptly taken to Port Police Station, where he is currently being processed and is expected to be arraigned in court," said a senior officer familiar with the case.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying surveillance and intelligence-led operations to curb the growing menace of narcotics in the coastal region and beyond.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intended destination of the recovered drugs and currency.
