Mvurya Inspects Kipchoge Keino Stadium Ahead of Mashujaa Day Celebrations in Eldoret

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has expressed confidence in the progress of ongoing works at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, which is expected to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, said the contractor was working round the clock to ensure the 15,000-seater facility is ready to host the national celebrations.

During an inspection tour of the stadium, the CS said he was encouraged by the progress made so far, expressing optimism that the facility would provide a befitting venue for the important national event.

He noted that the transformation of the stadium forms part of President William Ruto’s broader vision to revitalise Kenya’s sporting infrastructure and position sports as a key driver of economic transformation.

Mvurya said the investment in the facility would extend beyond the Mashujaa Day celebrations, noting that the stadium is expected to play a significant role in nurturing sporting talent and attracting major competitions to the North Rift region.

Located in Eldoret, popularly known as the City of Champions because of its rich athletics heritage, the stadium is expected to serve as a centre for talent development, high-altitude training and major sporting events.

The facility is also expected to create opportunities in sports tourism, hospitality, trade and employment, benefiting residents of Uasin Gishu County and neighbouring regions.

The upgraded stadium is expected to strengthen Eldoret’s position as a major sporting destination, building on the region’s reputation for producing world-class athletes who have represented Kenya in international competitions.

Mvurya said the government’s investment in sports infrastructure reflects its commitment to creating opportunities for young people while using sports to stimulate economic growth.

The Mashujaa Day celebrations will provide a national platform to showcase Eldoret’s development and sporting potential, while bringing together Kenyans from different parts of the country to honour individuals who have contributed to the nation’s progress.

The ongoing works at Kipchoge Keino Stadium are therefore central to preparations for the national event, with the contractor expected to ensure the facility meets the required standards ahead of the celebrations.

Once completed, the stadium is expected to provide a lasting sporting legacy for Eldoret and the wider North Rift region, supporting the development of athletes and expanding opportunities for businesses linked to sporting activities.
