Shauri Moyo A Housing Project Transforms Informal Settlement into Modern Urban Community
The face of Shauri Moyo is rapidly changing, thanks to the ongoing Shauri Moyo A Affordable Housing Project, part of the government’s broader slum upgrading programme aimed at addressing Nairobi’s pressing housing needs.
Launched in January 2023 by President William Samoei Ruto, the project is transforming a long-standing informal settlement into a well-planned, modern residential estate that promises dignity, safety, and sustainability for thousands of urban residents.
Located strategically next to Heshima Primary School, and easily accessible through several major routes, the development is emerging as a key urban hub within the city.
The estate will feature 1,848 housing units across 12 residential blocks, comprising:
-
560 three-bedroom units
-
840 two-bedroom units
-
448 one-bedroom units
Beyond housing, the project has been designed with community well-being in mind. It will include:
-
A parking lot for 1,300 vehicles
-
An open play area for children
-
A social hall for community events
-
A retail centre to support local commerce
These amenities aim to offer residents a high quality of life in a clean, secure, and well-connected environment.
In addition to improving housing conditions, the project has had a significant economic impact, generating thousands of jobs, both directly on-site and indirectly through supporting industries. Youth and women have been among the primary beneficiaries of these employment opportunities, in line with the government’s commitment to inclusive development.
The Shauri Moyo A Affordable Housing Project is one of several similar initiatives under Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme, which seeks to bridge the gap between housing supply and demand in urban areas, while phasing out unplanned settlements through sustainable infrastructure.
