President Ruto: Landmark Housing Deal Secures 20% of Affordable Units for Teachers

President William Ruto on Thursday witnessed the signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Affordable Housing Board and teachers’ unions, marking a major step in ensuring dignified living conditions for Kenya’s educators.

The agreement, signed at State House Nairobi, guarantees that 20 per cent of all Affordable Housing units developed under the government’s housing program will be allocated to teachers. This allocation recognizes the vital role that teachers play in shaping the nation’s future and affirms the government's commitment to improving their welfare.

Speaking after the signing, President Ruto hailed the MoU as a “transformative milestone” that reflects the administration’s promise to deliver inclusive, people-centered development.

“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that those who dedicate their lives to building our children and our country — our teachers — are not left behind in the pursuit of decent and affordable housing,” said President Ruto.

The President emphasized that housing is not just about shelter, but about dignity, security, and a stable foundation for families.

“This agreement goes beyond buildings. It is about recognizing our teachers for their tireless service, and ensuring they too benefit from the prosperity we are building across the nation.”

President Ruto also commended the collaborative spirit of the teachers’ unions and the Affordable Housing Board, saying such partnerships are crucial to delivering the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The Affordable Housing Programme, a flagship initiative of the current administration, aims to deliver over 200,000 housing units annually while creating jobs and stimulating local industries.

This new allocation for teachers is expected to boost morale in the education sector, improve retention rates, and support national efforts to raise living standards for public servants.
