Gachagua Applauds Murang’a MCAs for Rejecting Alleged State House Bribe

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has lauded members of the Murang’a County Assembly (MCAs) for what he termed as a "firm and principled stand against corruption and betrayal of the people of Mt. Kenya."

In a strongly worded statement released on Friday, Gachagua claimed that the MCAs were offered a Ksh 300,000 bribe to attend what he described as a "staged comedy session" at State House, a meeting he alleges was designed to peddle falsehoods and orchestrate schemes to divide the Mt. Kenya region.

“I want to salute the members of the Murang’a County Assembly for their integrity and unwavering stand against corruption,” said Gachagua. “They refused to be used as pawns in a larger plan to betray the people of the mountain. Their rejection of the bribe is a powerful statement of courage, loyalty, and conscience.”

While Gachagua did not provide specific evidence to support the bribery claims, he maintained that attempts to manipulate grassroots leaders through monetary incentives are becoming increasingly common in efforts to fracture the Mt. Kenya voting bloc.

“This was not just about money — it was about the soul of our region,” he added. “Our people are not for sale, and our leaders must never be complicit in such schemes.”

The former Deputy President has, in recent months, positioned himself as a vocal defender of Mt. Kenya unity and a critic of what he sees as growing political marginalization and internal division stoked by national leadership.

His statement also took veiled jabs at current political players, accusing unnamed individuals within the national government of undermining local leadership to advance selfish interests.

“It is unfortunate that while Kenyans are grappling with the high cost of living and economic hardship, some are busy orchestrating comical sessions at State House in a bid to hoodwink our people. We must remain vigilant,” he said.

So far, the State House has not responded to the allegations, and the identity of those allegedly behind the bribe offer remains unclear. The Murang’a County Assembly leadership has also not issued an official statement either confirming or denying the claims.

Gachagua urged other MCAs across Mt. Kenya to emulate the stance taken by their Murang’a counterparts, reiterating his call for political unity, integrity, and resistance to divisive tactics.“Let us not betray our people for token change. Mt. Kenya must speak with one voice — a voice that cannot be bought,” he concluded.
