Agriculture at the Core: Uasin Gishu Governor and Leaders Champion Innovation at 18th Agribusiness Trade Fair

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to agriculture as the county’s top development priority, highlighting a string of transformative projects aimed at empowering farmers, enhancing exports, and driving industrial growth.

Speaking during the 18th Agribusiness Trade Fair at the University of Eldoret (UoE), Governor Bii emphasized that agriculture remains Nguzo Number One—the foundational pillar of Uasin Gishu's development agenda.

“From the potato processing plant in Ainabkoi to the county aggregation centre in Moiben, the chicken abattoir in Kichinjio, the animal feeds plant in Mugundoi, the coffee mill in Cheramei, and the upcoming milk processing plant in Kapseret, we are investing in infrastructure that will redefine agricultural productivity,” Bii said.

He noted that these initiatives, most of which are in advanced stages, not only support local farmers but also open doors for agro-industrial growth and market expansion beyond county borders.

The 18th edition of the agribusiness fair, hosted at UoE, brought together key stakeholders in the agriculture sector, showcasing innovation, resilience, and the growing potential of Kenya’s agricultural sector.

Former West Pokot Governor and academician Prof. John Lonyangapuo, who also attended the event, called on all counties to invest in model farms that serve as training grounds for farmers on modern farming methods.

“If every county had model farms, we would revolutionize food production in Kenya. Farmers must be trained in modern techniques to meet today’s agricultural demands,” said Lonyangapuo.

Lonyangapuo, who is also the founder of the Agribusiness Trade Fair concept, took pride in how the idea has matured over the last 18 years since its inception during his tenure as Principal of Chepkoilel University College, now the University of Eldoret.

“I conceptualized this fair to be a hub of agricultural research and innovation. I am glad to see the university has nurtured the dream, transforming it into a prestigious platform for farmers, scholars, and innovators,” he said.

He also praised the university for its continued efforts in research on seed improvement, animal husbandry, disease control, and overall agribusiness innovation. Lonyangapuo urged the current leadership, staff, and students to upscale their research outputs and support local agriculture with practical, science-backed solutions.

Later in the day, Prof. Lonyangapuo paid a courtesy visit to Governor Jonathan Bii at his home, noting their shared history as colleagues at the University of Eldoret and mutual commitment to advancing agricultural development.

The agribusiness trade fair continues to grow as a key event on the national calendar, attracting farmers, agricultural firms, researchers, and government agencies focused on building a more resilient and innovative agricultural sector in Kenya.
