Two Kenya Air Force Officers Killed in Kwale Plane Crash

By Vivian Anyango

A tragic military aircraft crash has claimed the lives of two Kenya Air Force officers during a routine training mission in the Ndavaya area of Kinango Sub-County, near Mwakijembe Primary School.

The aircraft, identified as a Grob 120A training plane, had departed from Mombasa before vanishing from radar and later crashing. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion moments before the plane plummeted to the ground. Images from the crash site revealed extensive damage to the aircraft's nose, suggesting a steep nose-down impact.

Fortunately, the crash occurred in a sparsely populated area, and no civilian casualties have been reported.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel, along with local emergency responders, swiftly secured the site and began search and recovery operations. Authorities have confirmed the deaths of the two officers onboard, though their identities have not yet been publicly released.

County Commissioner Stephen Orinde stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the crash. The Ministry of Defence is expected to release a detailed report upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.

The Grob 120A, a German-made trainer aircraft, is widely used by the Kenya Air Force for cadet pilot instruction. This incident has sparked renewed concern over the condition and modernization of Kenya’s military training fleet, with calls emerging for urgent upgrades to ensure safety and reliability.
