Two Arrested as 75 Bales of Suspected Cannabis Seized in Marsabit

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police officers from Marsabit County successfully intercepted a vehicle carrying a large haul of suspected narcotics on Thursday. The operation, which was based on actionable intelligence, took place in Ambalo, Sololo Sub-County, along the Marsabit-Moyale Highway.

The vehicle, which was reportedly transporting cannabis sativa from Uran, was flagged down after a determined pursuit by law enforcement. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a staggering 75 bales of dry matter believed to be cannabis sativa, a narcotic substance widely known for its illegal trade in the region.

Two suspects were immediately arrested and taken into custody for questioning. They are currently facing charges related to the trafficking and possession of narcotics, and will be presented before the courts for further legal proceedings.

In a statement following the operation, the National Police Service (NPS) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug trade and maintaining a drug-free society. “This operation is part of our continued efforts to curb the trafficking of illicit drugs, which pose a serious threat to the safety and well-being of our communities,” the NPS said.

The NPS also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reinforcing the importance of community collaboration in the fight against narcotics. "Public support is critical to our success in tackling drug-related crime, and we encourage citizens to continue sharing information that can aid in further operations."

The operation in Ambalo highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to clamp down on the movement of illegal drugs along key transport routes in Kenya. The Marsabit region, due to its proximity to the Ethiopian border, has long been a hotspot for narcotics trafficking, with cannabis sativa often smuggled into the country and transported to various destinations.

The National Police Service continues to work in partnership with other agencies to address drug-related crimes, as well as to ensure the safety of all Kenyans from the harmful effects of narcotics.
