Irungu Nyakera’s Bold Vision to Transform SGR: More Kenyan, Greener, and Profitable

Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate, Irungu Nyakera, has outlined an ambitious strategy to transform the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) into a more locally-driven, efficient, and profitable asset. Speaking at a press briefing today, Nyakera proposed several key measures aimed at enhancing the railway’s operational effectiveness, reducing long-term costs, and boosting its contribution to Kenya’s economic development.

Nyakera’s reform agenda comes at a time when the SGR, despite its potential, continues to face challenges in terms of profitability, sustainability, and full integration into Kenya’s broader transportation network. His proposals, which include shifting to electric trains and renegotiating loan terms, have been welcomed by various stakeholders in the transport and logistics sectors.

Key Proposals for SGR Revitalization

Renegotiate SGR Loan Terms:

  1. Nyakera urged the government to renegotiate the SGR’s loan terms to extend repayment periods and lower interest rates. He emphasized that this would provide financial relief, enabling the SGR to operate more sustainably and reduce its current financial burden.

  2. Localize Operations:

  3. In a move to create jobs and ensure that the railway system benefits Kenyans, Nyakera called for increased local participation in SGR operations. He proposed hiring more Kenyan professionals to manage and run the railway, which would also foster a sense of ownership and pride.

  4. Switch to Electric Trains:
Nyakera advocated for transitioning from diesel-powered to electric trains. This shift would significantly cut long-term operational costs and contribute to reducing the railway’s carbon footprint. The move aligns with global sustainability goals and would position Kenya as a leader in environmentally-friendly transport systems in the region.

  5. Increase Cargo Capacity with Double-Stacking:
One of the most innovative suggestions was the adoption of double-stacking on the SGR, allowing trains to carry two containers stacked on top of each other. This would increase cargo capacity, improve efficiency, and position the SGR as a more competitive alternative to road transport.

  6. Complete the Naivasha–Kampala Line and Boost Kisumu Port:
Nyakera emphasized the importance of completing the Naivasha-Kampala line and prioritizing the development of Kisumu Port. He stressed that enhancing regional connectivity between Kenya, Uganda, and the wider East African community would unlock new trade opportunities, particularly through Lake Victoria.

  7. Incentivize Rail Cargo from Mombasa:
To encourage businesses to use rail instead of trucks, Nyakera proposed providing tax or cost incentives for companies to transport cargo by rail. This would ease road congestion, reduce wear and tear on highways, and improve the efficiency of the entire logistics chain.

  8. Build Dry Ports and Loading Stations Near Industries:
To facilitate smoother logistics, Nyakera called for the construction of dry ports and loading stations next to industrial zones. This would allow manufacturers to directly ship goods via the SGR, reducing transportation costs and promoting industrial growth.

  9. Expand Passenger Services:
Recognizing the untapped potential of passenger travel, Nyakera proposed expanding rail services between major cities, including Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kisumu. This would help ease congestion on highways and offer a reliable, affordable transportation option for Kenyans.

  10. Involve Private Sector Players:
Nyakera also suggested allowing private companies, such as cement manufacturers and agricultural exporters, to run their own trains on the SGR network. This would not only generate additional revenue for the railway but also drive innovation and competition in the sector.

A New Name for SGR:

In a symbolic move to foster national pride, Nyakera proposed renaming the SGR to something more localized, such as "KenRail" or "Uhuru Rail." He argued that this would help further integrate the railway into the fabric of Kenyan identity and ownership.

A Vision for Kenya’s Future

“The SGR has the potential to revolutionize Kenya’s transport sector, but we must ensure it works for Kenyans,” Nyakera said. “By localizing operations, cutting costs, and increasing efficiency, we can turn the SGR into a world-class system that not only serves the country but also contributes significantly to our economic growth.”

Nyakera’s proposals have already sparked discussions among business leaders, transport experts, and government officials, many of whom see them as a practical roadmap to unlocking the full potential of the SGR. With Kenya’s elections approaching, his vision for the railway has positioned him as a forward-thinking candidate committed to improving national infrastructure and driving economic growth.
