Senate Session Erupts Over IG’s Statement on Death of Influencer Albert Ojwang

Tensions erupted in the Senate on Wednesday as Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja’s attempt to address lawmakers on the controversial death of social media influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang was temporarily disrupted by senators demanding immediate answers.

IG Kanja appeared before the Senate alongside Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin. The three top officials had been summoned to respond to questions surrounding Ojwang’s death while in police custody on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

The session turned chaotic moments after CS Murkomen concluded his statement and invited IG Kanja to make his remarks. A group of senators interrupted the proceedings, insisting on raising procedural concerns and posing questions before the IG could speak.

As the disagreement intensified, IG Kanja returned to his seat, and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi was forced to intervene. The Speaker paused the session and held a brief consultation with the House’s majority and minority leaders to restore order.

“This is a serious issue we are discussing, not a forum for viral TikTok clips,” Speaker Kingi firmly stated, rebuking senators for the disorderly conduct. “The CS has presented his statement and will respond to questions from senators. IG Kanja may now continue with his address.”

Following the Speaker’s ruling, senators were permitted to question the officials before the IG resumed his prepared statement.

Earlier, CS Murkomen conveyed the government’s condolences to the Ojwang family and pledged a full investigation into the circumstances of his death.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Albert Ojwang — to his parents, his wife, and their only child — and I assure them that my ministry will do everything possible to ensure justice is delivered,” said Murkomen.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to accountability, warning that those responsible would be held to account.

“Those responsible for these actions will face severe consequences to serve as a warning that such incidents should never occur in police custody,” he added.

Ojwang’s death has sparked national outrage, with rights groups, online communities, and political leaders calling for transparency and justice. The Senate proceedings are part of an ongoing inquiry into police conduct and the protection of citizens in state custody.
