A political storm is brewing within the Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) following explosive claims by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who says there is an active plot to oust him from his position as Deputy Party Leader.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, Natembeya accused unnamed party insiders — including a sitting Member of Parliament elected on a DAP-K ticket — of orchestrating a scheme to remove him from the party’s top leadership. He alleged that state machinery is being weaponized in the campaign against him, and warned that the silence of the party leadership is only deepening divisions within the movement.
“We are not blind. We recognize the discomfort some within the party feel toward the bold, people-centered leadership of the Deputy Party Leader,” Natembeya stated. “Even more disturbing is this: the architect of the scheme to weaponize state machinery against Governor Natembeya is a Member of Parliament elected on a DAP-K ticket.”
Natembeya, a former Regional Commissioner turned governor, is widely regarded as one of the party’s most visible and outspoken figures. His leadership style — often described as direct and reform-oriented — has earned him both praise and criticism within political circles.
In his statement, Natembeya questioned whether DAP-K still stands for justice, fairness, and internal democracy, or if it is “descending into a culture of selective politics that punishes truth and rewards sabotage.”
“Let it be clear: Governor Natembeya does not stand alone,” he said. “Any attempt to bring him down will only expose those who fear real change — and the people will not be silent.”
The governor’s claims have sparked concern among DAP-K supporters and political analysts, many of whom view the situation as a test of the party’s internal cohesion and democratic values. As of Friday morning, the party’s national leadership had not issued a formal response to Natembeya’s allegations.
Efforts to reach senior party officials for comment were unsuccessful.
Political observers say the developments could have far-reaching implications for DAP-K’s future, especially as the 2027 general elections loom on the horizon.
Natembeya, who was instrumental in growing DAP-K’s influence in the Rift Valley and Western regions, enjoys a strong grassroots following. Any attempts to sideline him could risk alienating key constituencies and destabilizing the party's leadership structure.
