Police Warn Traders Against Hiring Goons For Security Ahead of Protests

The National Police Service has issued a stern warning to traders and business owners against hiring goons to guard their premises during tomorrow’s planned protests, stating that such actions are illegal and could lead to arrests.

In an interview, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga emphasized that the responsibility of maintaining law and order lies solely with law enforcement agencies.

“Those claiming they are protecting their businesses must stop. There is no law that permits citizens to hire individuals to provide private security during public unrest,” Nyaga stated.

He stressed that the police are the only institution legally mandated to protect life and property, warning that those who defy this could face legal consequences.

“Youths being recruited to offer protection during protests are not only risking arrest but also exposing themselves to serious legal repercussions,” he added. “Any participation in such arrangements is a violation of the law at the highest level.”

The warning comes amid growing tension ahead of the planned demonstrations, with reports indicating that some traders in protest-prone areas have been considering hiring private muscle to ward off looters or vandals.
