A coalition of foreign diplomatic missions, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, has issued a stern warning to the Kenyan government ahead of the planned nationwide protests on Wednesday, June 25. The envoys expressed deep concern over the recent use of excessive force and the deployment of masked or unidentified individuals during previous demonstrations.
In a joint statement released Tuesday, the diplomats urged Kenyan authorities to respect constitutional freedoms, particularly the right to peaceful assembly and free expression. They cautioned against the use of “goons” and plainclothes officers in managing the protests, warning that such tactics risk exacerbating tensions and eroding public confidence in law enforcement.
“The presence of unidentifiable law enforcement officers and armed individuals in civilian clothing only serves to escalate violence and undermine public trust,” the statement read.
The protests, driven largely by discontent among the youth over economic hardship and governance concerns, have gained momentum across the country. The diplomatic missions acknowledged this rising frustration and encouraged the government to engage in open dialogue with its citizens.
“We encourage the government and security forces to exercise maximum restraint and engage in constructive dialogue with citizens, especially the youth,” the diplomats stated.
The statement further called on the Kenyan leadership to adhere to the country’s democratic principles and its international human rights obligations. The envoys emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in policing, especially in volatile situations.
As tensions rise ahead of Wednesday’s planned protests, both local and international observers are expected to closely monitor the government’s response and the conduct of security personnel.
The foreign missions have also requested an official response from the Kenyan government regarding their concerns, even as pressure mounts for a peaceful and lawful handling of the demonstrations.
