Opposition leaders have called for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat following the sudden and controversial death of blogger and teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang.
In a strongly worded statement read by former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi—and flanked by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—the leaders condemned what they described as a "state-sanctioned cover-up," accusing senior government officials of systematically obstructing justice.
Ojwang's arrest has drawn intense scrutiny, particularly the unexplained 26-hour gap between his detention and his subsequent arrival in Nairobi. Opposition leaders argue that the lack of a clear timeline or official account raises serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.
“When 31-year-old Albert Ojwang walked back to his home, neither he nor his family could have imagined that those would be his final moments,” said Muturi.
He further demanded immediate protection for whistleblowers within the police service, particularly junior officers who may be under pressure to remain silent.
“This country cannot afford to normalize state brutality. The life of every Kenyan matters—whether they are the child of a minister or the son of a fisherman. Justice for Albert Ojwang must not be delayed and must not be denied,” Muturi declared.
He also called on the government to offer protection and support to Ojwang’s grieving family, asserting that the nation owes them nothing less than the full weight of justice.
