Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has recorded a significant milestone in Kenya’s medical history by successfully conducting its first-ever Coronary Angiogram Camp, held from Friday, June 20 to Saturday, June 21, 2025. The two-day event is the first of its kind in Western and North Rift Kenya, and the first to be performed in a public healthcare facility within the region.
The breakthrough procedures were conducted in collaboration with Aga Khan University Hospital, bringing together expert teams to deliver life-saving diagnostic and interventional cardiac care.
A coronary angiogram is a vital, minimally invasive imaging procedure used to assess the condition of coronary arteries. It involves the use of contrast dye and X-ray imaging to detect blockages, narrowing, or abnormalities in the heart’s blood vessels—conditions often linked to chest pain, shortness of breath, or abnormal cardiac test results.
During the camp, six patients successfully underwent both diagnostic and interventional coronary procedures. The operations not only identified serious cardiac issues but, in some cases, provided immediate interventions such as stent placements, reducing the need for multiple hospital visits and lowering overall healthcare costs.
> “This initiative is a game-changer,” said Dr. Ayub Barasa, Head of Cardiology at MTRH. “By confirming coronary artery disease on the spot and treating it right away, we dramatically improve patient outcomes while saving time and resources.”
The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Philip Kirwa, lauded the efforts, thanking the Government of Kenya and the Ministry of Health for supporting such advanced care under the Social Health Authority (SHA) framework. He urged Kenyans to register under SHA, saying, “Specialized services like these are now within reach, and clients stand to benefit immensely.”
The success of the camp was made possible through a dynamic collaboration between MTRH and a visiting team from Aga Khan University Hospital, led by Dr. Jeilan Mohammed and Dr. Etienne Amendezo. The MTRH team, spearheaded by Dr. Ayub Barasa, Dr. Wilson Sugut, Dr. Joan Kiyeng, and Dr. David Lagat, was supported by a dedicated unit of nursing, radiology, and biomedical professionals.
This milestone marks a major advancement in accessible cardiac care, bringing high-level cardiology services closer to Kenyans who previously had to travel long distances—or pay high private sector fees—for similar procedures.
As MTRH continues to expand its specialized service offerings, the Coronary Angiogram Camp stands as a bold testament to the potential of public-private partnerships in transforming healthcare across Kenya.
