A massive fire broke out at Barnabas Stage in Nakuru County earlier today following a fuel tanker explosion, igniting several nearby tankers and triggering chaos along the busy Nakuru-Nairobi highway.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion followed by a towering blaze, with emergency response teams rushing to the scene to contain the inferno. The fire spread rapidly, forcing the shutdown of the Nakuru-Nairobi highway for several hours and causing significant traffic disruptions. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as efforts to manage the situation continued.
Local authorities, including the Nakuru County Government and the police, had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident at the time of reporting. Investigations into the exact cause of the explosion are currently underway.
The Barnabas fire comes on the heels of another devastating blaze earlier this week in Kibra Estate, Nairobi, where over 100 families were left homeless. That fire, which tore through the densely populated informal settlement, was exacerbated by narrow access roads that prevented firefighting vehicles from reaching the scene in time.
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, who visited the Kibra site with local traders and area MP Peter Orero, promised swift government intervention and emergency aid for the affected families.
“Incidents of fire have become more common in informal settlements, especially in Nairobi. The government is committed to ending these tragedies to protect the lives and properties of citizens,” said CS Ruku during his visit.
