Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has issued a stern warning to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, urging him to tread cautiously in his relationship with President William Ruto, whom he accuses of using leaders from the Mt Kenya region for political expediency.
Speaking during a church service on Sunday in Rwarera, Meru County, Linturi claimed that President Ruto is positioning Kindiki as a temporary political tool, only to sideline him later—just as he allegedly did with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other Mt Kenya leaders.
Linturi, who was ousted from Cabinet following last year’s disbandment after mass youth-led anti-government protests, said his removal—alongside that of former Public Service CS Justin Muturi and the impeachment of Gachagua—are signs of a calculated strategy to eliminate influential Mt Kenya voices.
“Read the signs correctly because the Mt Kenya region has embarked on looking for an alternative government in 2027. You should not waste time but join them to make Ruto a one-term president,” Linturi told Kindiki.
The event was attended by allies of Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), including deputy party leader Cleophas Malala, who echoed Linturi’s concerns. Malala accused President Ruto of reducing Kindiki to a ceremonial figure, more visible at fundraising events than in substantive policy roles.
“They thought they were banishing Gachagua by impeaching him and branding him a tribalist, but now he has united the entire Kenya,” said Malala. He further alleged that the President is using Kindiki to create division in Mt Kenya politics while excluding him from critical national reforms like those targeting the coffee sector and the fight against alcoholism—areas Gachagua previously championed.
The remarks come amid growing signs of a political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Gachagua's camp seeking to consolidate support in the Mt Kenya region under the DCP banner.
