In a powerful show of leadership and unwavering advocacy, Hon. Mary Maingi, Member of Parliament for Mwea, has scored a major win for local rice farmers. Following her passionate appeal to the President during last month’s Mt. Kenya development tour, the government has responded decisively, announcing a major procurement plan aimed at easing the burden on Mwea’s hardworking farmers.
Acting on a directive issued today by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Kenya National Trading Corporation Limited (KNTC) has been appointed the main off-taker for the rice stockpile. KNTC will purchase 5,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice valued at approximately Ksh 500 million, with a firm commitment to pay farmers within 30 days.
This bold intervention comes at a critical time, just ahead of the next harvest season. With storehouses overflowing and market demand weakened by imports, Mwea farmers were staring at a potential crisis. But thanks to Hon. Maingi’s relentless follow-up and clear prioritization of her constituents’ needs, that threat has now been averted.
The announcement has been met with widespread praise from across the rice belt and beyond. Farmers, cooperatives, and agricultural stakeholders have hailed the MP for being a fearless champion of food security, economic justice, and rural resilience. Her action has not only secured immediate relief but also spotlighted the pivotal role Mwea plays in feeding the nation.
Hon. Maingi reaffirmed her commitment to standing shoulder to shoulder with Mwea’s farmers, ensuring they are never left behind in national policy conversations. Her efforts have reinforced the critical message that leaders who listen, act, and deliver can transform lives.
As the nation continues to strengthen its agricultural foundations, Hon. Mary Maingi’s example shines bright a trailblazer who gets things done for her people, with integrity, courage, and unmatched dedication.
